ALERT # 1 ON HURRICANE ERIN BY BAHAMAS DEPARTMENT OF METEOROLOGY

Alert #1 on Hurricane Erin issued by The Bahamas Department of Meteorology, Saturday August 16th, 2025, at 6pm EDT.   

…Category 5 Erin continuing to pass north of the Northern Leeward Islands…

A Tropical Storm Watch is now in effect for the Turks and Caicos Islands.   

A Tropical Storm Watch that Tropical Storm conditions could be experienced within the Turks and Caicos Islands within 48 hours. 

At 5 pm EDT, the center of Hurricane Erin was located near latitude 20.0 degrees north and longitude 64.0 degrees west, or about 475 miles South-southeast Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos Islands, 630 miles South-southeast of Matthew Town, Inagua, 600 miles Southeast of Mayaguana and 930 miles Southeast of New Providence. 

Hurricane Erin is moving toward the west near 15 miles-per-hour.  This motion is expected to continue this evening.  A turn toward the west-northwest is expected tonight with a decrease in forward speed, and a turn toward the north is expected to occur early next week.  On the forecast track, the center of Erin is expected to move just north of the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico through Sunday and pass to the east of the Turks and Caicos Islands and the Southeast Bahamas Sunday night and Monday. 

Maximum sustained winds are near 160 miles-per-hour with higher gusts.  Erin is a Category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.  Fluctuations in intensity are expected tonight through Sunday night.  A slow weakening is expected to begin on Monday. 

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 30 miles from the center and tropical Storm force winds extend outward up to 160 miles from the center.

Residents in the Turks and Caicos Islands should begin to make preparations for the possibility of Tropical Storm conditions beginning early Monday morning.  Residents in the Southeast Bahamas should closely monitor Alerts issued by the Bahamas Department of Meteorology and be ready to make preparations for possible Tropical Storm conditions in the next few days.   

The next Alert on Hurricane Erin will be issued at 9pm EDT.
