The Department of Trade, Industry and Fair Competition advises the public that it will be conducting a Consumer Protection Compliance Drive across retail establishments throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands to assess adherence to the Consumer Protection Ordinance.
The Department hereby gives notice to businesses in PROVIDENCIALES that inspections will be conducted as part of the Compliance Drive during the period October 5 - 9, 2026.
As part of its mandate, the Department is responsible for promoting and enforcing the Consumer Protection Ordinance, which provides essential safeguards for consumers in the supply of goods and services throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands.
A key component of the Ordinance is Parts IV and V, which outline the Duties of Providers to Consumers. These provisions are particularly important as they establish the obligations that businesses and service providers must meet to protect consumer interests. By clearly defining these responsibilities, the Ordinance guides providers in delivering quality goods and services while ensuring the fair treatment of consumers.
The objectives of the Compliance Drive are to:
- Ensure that providers understand and comply with their obligations to consumers under the Consumer Protection Ordinance.
- Increase awareness of conduct that may constitute misleading or deceptive practices, false representations, or other unfair business practices. ·
- Educate providers on the consumer complaints process and the enforcement mechanisms available when violations of the Ordinance occur
- Inform providers of the penalties and fines that may apply in cases of non-compliance.
- Promote and strengthen consumer protection and consumer affairs throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands.
The Department encourages all businesses to familiarize themselves with the requirements of the Consumer Protection Ordinance and to take the necessary steps to ensure compliance.
