Mission:

To protect, conserve and promote the cultural, historic and natural heritage of the Turks and Caicos Islands for present & future generations and for the enjoyment of all.

Overview:

The Turks & Caicos National Trust (The Trust) is a body corporate established in 1992 for the purpose of safeguarding the cultural, natural and historical heritage of the Turks & Caicos Islands. Currently six (6) heritage sites are under the supervision and day to day management regime of The Trust. These include:

  • Bird Rock point
  • Cheshire Hall
  • Heaving Down Rock
  • Little Water Cay
  • Middle Caicos Caves
  • Wades Green Plantation

The Trust is financially supported through membership dues, Government subvention, donations, grants, merchandise sales and income from Heritage Sites.

The Trust conducts a Public Awareness and Education Outreach Programme, this programme comprises the largest component within The Trust’s mandate. This department is responsible for creating an awareness of The Trust and promoting the brand of the organization.

Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies

Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies

The Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies was created in 2001 with a budget dedicated to preparation for response to Hurricanes.

Since then its mandate has been expanded to a more compressive approach to Disaster Management to include all hazards the islands are vulnerable too.  It activities now cover all phases of Disaster Management including Disaster Risk Reduction, the preparation of Flood Hazard and Vulnerability Studies, Planning and Training and Exercising and providing technical assistance.

During an actual emergency the department is responsible for providing warning and coordinating the response and support to government departments and private sector recovery efforts.

The headquarters are located at 1316 Customs Complex, Leeward Highway, Providenciales with a Sub Office in South Base, Grand Turk.  The District Commissioners on the islands of Salt Cay, South Caicos, Middle and North Caicos coordinate Disaster Management activities.

Department of Environment and Coastal Resources

Department of Environment and Coastal Resources

Mission:

To ensure sustainable utilization of the natural resources of the Turks and Caicos Islands, and to protect and promote biodiversity and economic prosperity through a sustainable fishing industry and environmentally sustainable development, a protected areas system.

Major Tasks:

  • Develop a systematized strategy to conduct sea patrol and land/foot patrols at fishery limits, protected areas, and coastal areas.
  • Formalize strategies to collect sand and quarry royalties and train more officers to assist in monitoring mining operations
  • Prepare survey plans for coastal infrastructures to improve the monitoring of swim zones and buoys, etc.
  • Review environmental impact assessments (EIAs)
  • Monitor development projects
  • Intensify environmental awareness activities with focus on young (students) and adults as well, including the tourists, hoteliers and the general public
  • To expand the Community Conservation Partnership Programme to incorporate more partners

Department of Fisheries & Marine Resources Management

Department of Fisheries & Marine Resources Management

Mission:

To ensure safety of life at sea and the protection of the marine environment in accordance with international treaties.

Overview:

As a UK Overseas Territory, the Turks and Caicos Islands, specifically, the Department of Maritime forms a part of the Red Ensign Group (REG). The REG is a British shipping register whose aim is to maintain international regulations and safety standards in its water. Any vessel on these registers is a ‘British ship’, and is entitled to fly the British Merchant Shipping flag the ‘Red Ensign’. As such, the Department is mandated to ensure the safety of TCI waters by maintenance of the ship register.

Department of Maritime Objectives:

  • Establish resources and processes capable of administering a safety and environmental protection programme
  • Maintain TCI ship registry
  • Administer legislation applicable to vessels operating under the TCI Shipping Registry and foreign vessels operating in TCI waters.

Gaming Inspectorate

Gaming Inspectorate

Mission:

To ensure a well regulated, transparent gaming industry in compliance with all international gaming standards.

Overview:

The Turks and Casino Islands Gaming Inspectorate has been in existence since 1990, regulated through the Gaming Inspectorate Department. To date, our gaming industry has seen four Casinos, eight gaming Slot Parlours and numerous bar machine operations. Our gaming industry is still in its developmental stages but is unique and regulated within the boundaries of the Gaming Ordinance.

Gaming Department Objectives:

  • Create a clear process for licensing; pre-qualification, application, and operation
  • Player and employee protection for the gaming industry
  • Establish clear reporting guidelines and operational Performance standards for all operators within the gaming industry
  • Establish local, international and regional links for best practices and reporting for anti-money laundering, financial reporting and due diligence practices.
Tourist Board

Tourist Board

Mission:

To promote the Turks and Caicos Islands as a leisure tourism destination and to render tourism as a means of enhancement of the reputation of the Islands and a means of improving the national economy to the benefit of both the Government and the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Overview:

The Turks and Caicos Tourist Board is a Statutory Board, separate and apart from the Civil Service, that was re-established under the Tourism Ordinance of 1990. Its purpose is to foster jobs and economic growth by developing the country’s tourism industry. It is funded solely by the Government of the Turks and Caicos.

The Turks and Caicos Tourist Board offers an unpaid internship programs where persons are able to receive hands on experience in the tourism arena, training in public transportation is also offered by the Training Unit for service providers and all other interested persons.

Tourist Board Objectives:

  • To promote the development of the tourism in the islands
  • To promote the efficiency of the tourism industry of the islands
  • To promote the training of people for employment in the tourism industry
  • To promote understanding in the Islands of the implications, importance and economic benefits of tourism
