LAUNCH OF CURRICULUM NEWS LETTER -“Curriculum Matters”

The Ministry/Department of Education is pleased to launch its Curriculum Development Newsletter – ‘Curriculum Matters’. This is a newsletter that emerged as a result of curriculum reform in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The Curriculum Development Officer, Mrs. Rhonda A. Blackman-Smith stated; “The new and exciting quarterly newsletter will keep all stakeholders (Principals, teachers, parents, businesses and the wider community) abreast of all things curriculum in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI).”

She further noted that; “This first edition provides an update on the latest developments in curriculum matters in the TCI.”

The Minister with responsibility for Education, Hon. Akierra Missick, also expressed her enthusiasm; “I am happy with the launch of this newsletter as a signal that work is progressing and that our community is being updated and informed at every step of the process.”

The first phase of the revision of the curriculum -the Early Childhood Curriculum from Infant 1 to Grade 2, was launched on Thursday, 8th September 2016 at a press conference held at the Premier’s Office, Providenciales under the theme “Building the Nation by Reforming Education-Success for Every Learner.”  The four core subjects: Science, Mathematics, Language Arts and Social Studies is being piloted in six schools; Eliza Simons, Ona Glinton, BEST Institute, Oseta Jolly, Ianthe Pratt and Enid Capron.

The revised curriculum is broad, balanced, coherent, relevant and meets the diversity of the students of the Turks and Caicos Islands. It embraces learning that is relevant, where students are able to ask questions and their interests are valued. It facilitates active learning and the creation of conducive learning environments where students are able to manipulate material and teachers act as facilitators of knowledge guiding the students along the process. This newsletter-“Curriculum Matters” will be one of the avenues, to keep stakeholders informed and updated on curriculum matters.

Free access is available to the Curriculum Newsletter –“Curriculum Matters” and the brochures via the Ministry of Education, Youth Sports and Library Services website under the heading Curriculum.
