MINISTRY OF HEALTH’S COVID-19 UPDATE #124

The Ministry of Health wishes to advise the public that as at 12am on 12th July 2020:

THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS HAS SEEN SOME CHANGES IN ITS COVID-19 POSITION SINCE THE PREVIOUS UPDATE. ONE NEW CONFIRMED CASE OF COVID-19 HAVE BEEN RECORDED. THE INDIVIDUAL IS A CONTACT OF A KNOWN CONFIRMED CASE. THIS BRINGS THE NUMBER OF ACTIVE CONFIRMED CASES TO FIFTY-EIGHT (58). FOUR (4) OF THE CASES CONTINUE TO BE UNDER HOSPITAL CARE. The Public Health Team is continuing its implementation of aggressive contact tracing and control measures in relation to all active cases.

The total number of confirmed positive cases identified in the TCI to DATE STANDS AT SEVENTY-ONE (72). No new COVID-19 related deaths have been recorded since the previous update and total COVID-19 related deaths remain at two (2). The total number of recoveries from COVID-19 stands at ten (10).

THREE (3) NEW TEST RESULTS HAVE BEEN RECORDED SINCE THE PREVIOUS UPDATE. CONFIRMING ONE (1) INDIVIDUAL POSITIVE AND TWO (2) OTHERS NEGATIVE FOR COVID-19. To date, the TCI has recorded a total of nine hundred and forty-six (946) test results, with eight hundred and seventy-four (874) confirmed to be negative and seventy-two (72) positive confirmations. All persons confirmed not to have COVID-19, and any contacts, (if quarantined, will be removed from quarantine/observation status) are asked to continue following proper guidelines from the Ministry of Health.

THE NUMBER OF PERSONS IN QUARANTINE/OBSERVATION HAS INCREASED TO 295. This includes: Confirmed cases (58), primary contacts of confirmed cases (118), secondary contacts of confirmed cases (78) returning TCI residents (41) – Twenty-one (21) of these persons are currently being quarantined at a non-medical facility. Persons under observation/quarantine, that are not confirmed or suspected cases, are either not displaying symptoms or have not met the case definition.

The increase in quarantine/observation numbers is as a result of the new confirmed case and their contacts being added to quarantine/observation status. To date, a total of 980 individuals have been released from quarantine/observation status. 

Local testing is being conducted for persons in a range of categories, according to the national testing strategy. This includes frontline workers and those who may need to travel for treatment abroad. These persons would not be reflected in quarantine numbers.

The public is strongly urged to follow all health advice and guidelines from the Ministry, especially as we progress with the phased reopening.

Please note the following definitions:

  • A suspected person is someone who meets the case definition as outlined by WHO and CARPHA - and is experiencing symptoms.
  • A person in quarantine is an individual on island who may have come in proximity to suspected or confirmed cases - and have not exhibited symptoms.

 Let's continue to reduce the risk by:

  1. Washing our hands for 20secs or more.
  2. Wearing of masks required in public.
  3. Practicing social distancing.
  4. Prepare your home, office and other surroundings by following the advice of the Ministry of Health and other credible health agencies.
  5. Cover your coughs and sneezes (use your elbow or a tissue which should be properly disposed of).
  6. Keep frequently touched surfaces clean e.g. tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets and sinks.
  7. Protect those who are vulnerable in the community such as the elderly or those with underlying health conditions.
  8. Do not discriminate against persons who have or are suspected of having COVID-19.

The Ministry of Health apologizes for the delay in publishing yesterday’s national dashboard update. Regrettably, this could not be avoided due to the prioritizing of efforts in other areas to ensure the well-being of the residents of the Turks & Caicos Islands above all else. We wish to reassure the public of the government’s commitment to keeping the public informed within as timely a manner as possible. The public is advised that as at 12am on 10th July 2020:

THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS HAS SEEN SOME CHANGE IN ITS COVID-19 POSITION SINCE THE PREVIOUS UPDATE. THE TCI HAS RECORDED THREE (3) NEW CONFIRMED CASES OF COVID-19; BRINGING THE NUMBER OF ACTIVE CONFIRMED CASES TO FIFTY-SIX (56); ONE CASE IS A CONTACT OF A KNOWN CONFIRMED CASE AND THE TWO OTHER CASES ARE LOCAL TRANSMISSION WITHOUT A CLEAR EPIDEMIOLOGICAL LINK. FOUR (4) OF THE CASES CONTINUE TO BE UNDER HOSPITAL CARE. The Public Health Team is continuing its implementation of aggressive contact tracing and control measures in relation to all active cases.

THIRTY-SIX (36) NEW TEST RESULTS HAVE BEEN RECORDED SINCE THE PREVIOUS UPDATE. CONFIRMING THREE (3) PERSONS POSITIVE AND THIRTY-THREE (33) INDIVIDUALS HAVE TESTED NEGATIVE FOR COVID-19. To date, the TCI has recorded a total of nine hundred and thirty-six (906) test results, with eight hundred and thirty-seven (837) confirmed to be negative and sixty-nine (69) positive confirmations. All persons confirmed not to have COVID-19, and any contacts, (if quarantined, will be removed from quarantine/observation status) are asked to continue following proper guidelines from the Ministry of Health.

THE NUMBER OF PERSONS IN QUARANTINE/OBSERVATION HAS INCREASED TO 284. This includes: Confirmed cases (56), primary contacts of confirmed cases (112), secondary contacts of confirmed cases (75) returning TCI residents (41) – Twenty-one (21) of these persons are currently being quarantined at a non-medical facility. Persons under observation/quarantine, that are not confirmed or suspected cases, are either not displaying symptoms or have not met the case definition.

The change in quarantine/observation numbers is as a result of the new confirmed cases and their contacts being added to quarantine/observation status; also, the quarantine period having expired for several individuals, who have been removed from quarantine/observation status. To date, a total of 980 individuals have been released from quarantine/observation status.

The Ministry of Health would like to advise the public that as at 12am on 9th July 2020:

THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS HAS EXPERIENCED SIGNIFICANT CHANGE IN ITS COVID-19 POSITION SINCE THE PREVIOUS UPDATE. THE TCI HAS IDENTIFIED ELEVEN (11) NEW CONFIRMED CASES OF COVID-19. THIS BRINGS THE NUMBER OF ACTIVE CONFIRMED CASES TO FIFTY-THREE (53), WITH FOUR (4) OF THE CASES CONTINUING TO BE UNDER HOSPITAL CARE. The Public Health Team is continuing its implementation of aggressive contact tracing and control measures in relation to all active cases.

The total number of confirmed positive cases identified in the TCI to DATE STANDS AT SIXTY-SIX (66), with no new suspected cases being recorded. No new COVID-19 related deaths have been recorded since the previous update and total COVID-19 related deaths remain at two (2). The total number of recoveries from COVID-19 remains at ten (10).

FORTY-SEVEN (47) NEW TEST RESULTS HAVE BEEN RECORDED SINCE THE PREVIOUS UPDATE. ELEVEN (11) INDIVIDUALS HAVE TESTED POSITIVE AND THIRTY-SIX (36) HAVE TESTED NEGATIVE. To date, the TCI has recorded a total of eight hundred and seventy (870) test results, with eight hundred and four (804) confirmed to be negative and sixty-six (66) positive confirmations. All persons confirmed not to have COVID-19, and any contacts, (if quarantined, will be removed from quarantine/observation status) are asked to continue following proper guidelines from the Ministry of Health.

THE NUMBER OF PERSONS IN QUARANTINE/OBSERVATION HAS INCREASED TO 276. This includes: Confirmed cases (53), primary contacts of confirmed cases (103), secondary contacts of confirmed cases (66) returning TCI residents (54) – Thirty-four (34) of these persons are currently being quarantined at a non-medical facility. Persons under observation/quarantine, that are not confirmed or suspected cases, are either not displaying symptoms or have not met the case definition.

The INCREASE in quarantine/observation numbers is as a result of the new confirmed cases, their contacts and returning residents being added to quarantine/observation status. To date, a total of 967 individuals have been released from quarantine/observation status.

THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS HAS EXPERIENCED MINIMAL CHANGE IN ITS COVID-19 POSITION SINCE THE PREVIOUS UPDATE. NO NEW CONFIRMED CASES OF COVID-19 HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED. THE NUMBER OF ACTIVE CONFIRMED CASES STANDS AT FORTY-TWO (42), WITH FOUR (4) OF THE CASES CONTINUING TO BE UNDER HOSPITAL CARE. The Public Health Team is continuing its implementation of aggressive contact tracing and control measures in relation to all active cases.

The total number of confirmed positive cases identified in the TCI to DATE STANDS AT fIFTY-FIVE (55), with no new suspected cases being recorded. No new COVID-19 related deaths have been recorded since the previous update and total COVID-19 related deaths remain at two (2). The total number of recoveries from COVID-19 remains at ten (10).

NO NEW POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE TEST RESULTS HAVE BEEN RECORDED SINCE THE PREVIOUS UPDATE. To date, the TCI has recorded a total of eight hundred and twenty-three (823) test results, with seven hundred and sixty-eight (768) confirmed to be negative and fifty-five (55) positive confirmations. All persons confirmed not to have COVID-19, and any contacts, (if quarantined, will be removed from quarantine/observation status) are asked to continue following proper guidelines from the Ministry of Health.

THE NUMBER OF PERSONS IN QUARANTINE/OBSERVATION HAS INCREASED TO 244. This includes: Confirmed cases (42), primary contacts of confirmed cases (108), secondary contacts of confirmed cases (65) returning TCI residents (29) – Fifteen (15) of these persons are currently being quarantined at a non-medical facility. Persons under observation/quarantine, that are not confirmed or suspected cases, are either not displaying symptoms or have not met the case definition.

The INCREASE in quarantine/observation numbers is as a result of contacts OF CONFIRMED POSITIVE CASES being added to quarantine/observation status. To date, a total of 967 individuals have been released from quarantine/observation status.

ADDITIONAL POSITIVE CASES OF COVID-19 IDENTIFIED IN TCI INCLUDING AT THE PROVIDENCIALES DETENTION CENTER

Since June 22nd 2020, the Ministry of Health has identified a number of positive cases of Covid-19 on the island of Providenciales. The latest results of testing bring the total number of Covid-19 positive cases to 54 for the Turks and Caicos Islands. The most recent results received last night will be reflected in todays updated dashboard.

These cases have been identified as a result of contact tracing of positive cases, persons presenting to health care settings with symptoms as well as persons who were detained in the detention center from the community.

The Ministry of Health’s Public Health Team is in the field conducting additional contact tracing and is working with the Ministry of Immigration, Department of Immigration and the Detention Center staff in order to conduct contact tracing and quarantine in accordance with Ministry of Health protocols.

The general public is reminded to;

  • Comply with the control measures to prevent and control the spread of Covid-19
  • Be aware of the symptoms and signs of Covid-19 (cough, shortness of breath, fever, diarrhea, loss of smell/taste)
  • Stay home if you are unwell and call the Health Hotlines on 333 0911 or 232 9444
  • Wear face coverings in public
  • Maintain social distancing of 6 feet from other persons
  • Cover your cough/sneeze with your elbow or disposable napkin
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water and use hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available
  • Do not discriminate against persons who are suspected of having Covid-19
