Be sure to check engine, sail and rigging before getting underway.
Ensure that there is enough fuel for the trips you are about to make.
Check the weather forecast – don’t leave if storms are predicated.
Make sure that you leave a “float plan with someone reliable including where you are going, how many persons are on board and when you excepted to be return.
Ensure that you have the basic safety equipment on board:
Life jackets
Flares
VHF Radio
Horn or sounding signal device
Fire extinguisher
Life buoy or throw ring
Anchor with rope
When close to shore or other vessels maintain a safe speed and distance.
Be aware of swimmers.
Ensure the crew members know where to find life jackets and how to wear them.
Do not pump waste overboard, close to shore or in harbour.
Remember alcohol and boating do not mix. Always have a designated captain aboard.
Remain seated while the vessel is in motion.
Ensure you know the location of life jackets.
Be aware of over loaded ferries. If you think that there are too many persons onboard disembark the vessel before it leaves the dock?
Know where the emergency exists are.
Follow safety briefing and instructions given by the crew before leaving the dock.
