Turks and Caicos Islands Statistics Authority
The Statistical Office was originally one of the two units in the Department of Economic Planning and Statistics and with the task of maintaining and coordinating a quality statistical service that provides timely and accurate information to assist public and private sector management and decision-making.
Prior to 1993, the Statistical Office was a Statistical Unit which operated within the Financial Secretary's Office until it was disbanded in 1993. However, with the joint efforts of the Government of the Turks and Caicos Islands, the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), and the Caribbean Regional Technical Assistance Centre (CARTAC), under the Institutional Strengthening of Statistical Services Project, the Statistical Office was re-established in 1999 under the Department of Economic Planning and Statistics (DEPS). Since then, it has continued its work in building statistical databases and providing official statistics for the Turks and Caicos Islands.
The Statistics Department subsequently operated as a separate Government department, where the staff, both former and current, made significant contributions to the collection, production, and maintenance of statistical data series that meet international standards.
With the enactment of the Statistics Ordinance 2022, a new legal framework was established for the production and coordination of official statistics in the Turks and Caicos Islands. In 2023, the Statistics Department transitioned to become the Turks and Caicos Islands Statistics Authority. Today, the Authority continues to build on the strong foundation established over the years by producing and disseminating high-quality, reliable, and timely official statistics.
