TURKS & CAICOS ISLANDS REMEMBRANCE DAY EVENTS SUNDAY 11th NOVEMBER 2018

The Survey and Mapping Department (SMD), in collaboration with the Department of Environment & Coastal Resources (DECR), the Department Disaster Management and Emergencies (DDME) and the Department of Planning will be celebrating Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day, 2018.

GIS Day, which falls on the 14th of November this year is an international forum for users of GIS technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society. Here in the TCI, GIS Day 2018 will focus on the use of GIS technology to provide a practical approach to real-world problem-solving and to develop the interest of our youths in this upcoming industry as a viable career option.

According to Mr Cyprian Smith, Director of Survey and Mapping and Interim Chairman of the TCI GIS Committee; “Last year’s event was well received, however, there was a calling for a more practical approach by those who were in attendance. In response to that request, we have decided to make this year’s event a little more practical, offering participants an opportunity to interface with the various Departments and if possible, to collect and process geospatial data.”

The event, which will be celebrated under the theme “Discovering the World: Working Effectively Day by Day, Completing Tasks Efficiently, The GIS Way” will be held on Wednesday, 14th November 2018 at the Gustavus Lightbourne Sports Complex, Providenciales from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with Dr. Hubert Fulford, President of the Turks and Caicos Islands Community College (TCICC) as the event’s keynote speaker. Various public and private organisations, as well as local high schools and colleges, have been invited to attend with an opportunity to discover and explore the benefits of GIS to our local industry.
