BAHAMAS AND TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS PUBLIC FORECAST

THIS IS THE PUBLIC FORECAST FOR TODAY AND TONIGHT WEDNESDAY 18TH, NOVEMBER 2020 ISSUED BY THE BAHAMAS DEPARTMENT OF METEOROLOGY.

GENERAL SITUATION: A STRONG COLD FRONT IS MAKING ITS WAY SOUTH THROUGH THE ARCHIPELAGO FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE WEEK.

SPECIAL WARNINGS: RESIDENTS, MOTORISTS AND WAY-FARERS SHOULD EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION FOR STRONG WINDS, RIP CURRENTS, SALT WATER INUNDATION, ROUGH SURF AND HIGH SEAS OVER TOPPING SEA WALLS, COASTAL ROADS AND BEACH FRONT PROPERTY, ESPECIALLY ON THE FISHING HOLE ROAD IN GRAND BAHAMA AND THE GLASS WINDOW BRIDGE ON THE ISLAND OF ELEUTHERA.

WEATHER:  PARTLY CLOUDY TO CLOUDY MILD AND WINDY WITH SCATTERED SHOWERS AND ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS, HEAVY AT TIMES IN VICINITY AND AHEAD OF THE FRONTAL BOUNDARY THROUGH TONIGHT.

ADVISORY: SMALL CRAFT OPERATORS SHOULD REMAIN IN PORT

WINDS: NORTHEASTERLY AT 25 TO 30 KNOTS GUSTING TO GALE FORCE IN THE NORTHWEST AND CENTRAL BAHAMAS AND 20 TO 25 KNOTS IN THE SOUTHEAST BAHAMAS

SEAS: 8 TO 12 FEET IN LARGE NORTH AND NORTHEASTERLY SWELLS IN THE NORTHWEST AND CENTRAL BAHAMAS AND 5 TO 8 FEET IN SLIGHT TO MODERATE SWELLS IN THE SOUTHEAST BAHAMAS INCLUDINING THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS.

  1. A BROAD AREA OF LOW PRESSURE COULD FORM IN A DAY OR SO OVER THE SOUTHWESTERN CARIBBEAN SEA. THIS AREA HAS A LOW 30 PERCENT CHANCE OF DEVELOPMENT WITH IN THE NEXT 5 DAYS.
  2. A NON-TROPICAL AREA OF LOW PRESSURE COULD FORM BETWEEN THE BAHAMAS AND BERMUDA BY EARLY NEXT WEEK. THIS AREA HAS A LOW 20 PERCENT CHANCE OF DEVELOPMENT AS IT NORTHEASTWARD THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF NEXT WEEK.
