BAHAMAS AND TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS PUBLIC FORECAST

THIS IS A PUBLIC FORECAST FOR TODAY TUESDAY 17TH NOVEMBER 2020 ISSUED BY THE BAHAMAS DEPARTMENT OF METEOROLOGY  

GENERAL SITUATION:  A COLD FRONT WILL ENTER THE NORTHWEST BAHAMAS LATER TODAY WITH A ROBUST HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM RAPIDLY BUILDING IN ITS WAKE THAT WILL SUPPORT VERY WINDY CONDITIONS ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

SPECIAL WARNINGS: BEACHGOERS AND MARINERS SHOULD EXERCISE CAUTION DUE TO THE STRONG RISK OF DANGEROUS RIP CURRENTS AND ROUGH SURF CONDITIONS MAINLY AT NORTH AND EAST COAST BEACHES. DRIVERS AND PEDESTRIANS SHOULD EXERCISE CAUTION ALONG COASTAL ROADS DUE TO SEA SPRAY, OVERTOPPING WAVES AND COASTAL FLOODING THAT CAN REDUCE VISIBILITY AND CREATE HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS ESPECIALLY ALONG THE GLASS WINDOW BRIDGE IN ELEUTHERA AND THE FISHING HOLE ROAD IN GRAND BAHAMA.

CENTRAL AND SOUTHEAST BAHAMAS INCLUDING THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS

WEATHER: PARTLY TO MOSTLY CLOUDY AND WINDY WITH A FEW SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THE SLIGHT CHANCE OF AN ISOLATED THUNDERSTORM MAINLY IN THE VICINITY OF THE FRONTAL BOUNDARY THROUGH TONIGHT.

ADVISORY: A SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FOR THE CENTRAL BAHAMAS AND A SMALL CRAFT CAUTION IS IN EFFECT FOR THE SOUTHEAST BAHAMAS.

WINDS: NORTHEASTERLY AT 15 TO 25 KNOTS IN THE CENTRAL BAHAMAS AND NORTHEAST TO EAST AT 15 TO 20 KNOTS IN THE SOUTHEAST BAHAMAS INCLUDING THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS OVER OPEN WATERS.

SEAS: 5 TO 8 FEET IN THE CENTRAL BAHAMAS AND 4 TO 7 FEET OVER THE OCEAN IN THE SOUTHEAST BAHAMAS INCLUDING THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS.

NORTHWEST BAHAMAS

WEATHER: VARIABLE CLOUDINESS, WARM AND BREEZY TO WINDY WITH A FEW SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THE CHANCE OF ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS MAINLY IN THE VICINITY OF THE FRONTAL BOUNDARY…VERY WINDY AND A BIT CHILLY WITH THE CHANCE OF A STRAY SHOWER TONIGHT.

ADVISORY: A SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY COMES INTO EFFECT THIS AFTERNOON AND BOATERS IN THE EXTREME NORTHWEST BAHAMAS SHOULD REMAIN IN OR NEAR PORT.

WINDS: NORTHEASTERLY AT 15 KNOTS THIS MORNING BUT INCREASING TO 20 TO 30 KNOTS BY EVENING OVER OPEN WATERS.

SEAS: 3 TO 5 FEET THIS MORNING BUT BUILDING UP TO 8 TO 12 FEET BY EVENING OVER THE OCEAN.

ENVIROMENTAL CONDITIONS ARE FORECAST TO BECOME CONDUCIVE FOR DEVELOPMENT AND A TROPICAL DEPRESSION COULD FORM BY THE WEEKEND AS THE SYSTEM SLOWLY MOVES WESTWARD. THE SYSTEM HAS A MEDIUM OR 40 PERCENT CHANCE FOR FORMATION THROUGH FIVE DAYS… ELSEWHERE TROPICAL CYCLONE FORMATION IS NOT EXPECTED DURING THE NEXT FIVE DAYS…
