International Volunteer’s Day December 5th, 2021

The Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies, salutes and say thank you to our past and present  DDME Volunteers, and all other volunteers, here in the Turks and Caicos Islands, who  continue to support the department, as we celebrate International Volunteers Day, on December 5, 2021.   In 1985, the United Nations set aside this day,  in recognition of the tireless work,  and dedication of Volunteers Worldwide.

This year’s theme, “Volunteer now for our Common future,” aims to inspire people, whether they are decision makers or citizens, to take-action NOW, for people and the planet.  We know that, when people are encouraged to get involved in solving problems, the outcomes are more likely to be feasible and lasting.  It is also known that with the help of volunteers, communities become more people-centred, which in turn, helps to build a better and safer future for us all.

In the words of the late, United Nations Secretary- General, Kofi Annan, “If our hopes of building a better and safer world are to become more than wishful thinking, we will need the engagement of volunteers more than ever.”

Therefore, on December, 5, 2021, let us remember and say a big thank you! not just to the volunteers here in the Turks and Caicos Islands, but to volunteers everywhere for their continuous commitment,  support, dedication and service, whenever they are call upon.

Once again, on this International Volunteers Day, the Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies Turks and Caicos Islands says, THANK YOU!
