JOB SUMMARY:

To support the Superintendent of Prisons to maintain security, control, supervision and the safe custody of Offenders. The Prison Service is a professional organisation whose duty is to serve the public by keeping in custody those committed by the court. The duty is to look after Offenders with humanity and to help them lead law abiding and useful lives in custody and after release. The position has specific responsibility for managing the daily operations, security and function of the core Prison Routine in regards to the daily supervision of the shift.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.    Comply with all standing orders, emergency orders and notices to Staff. To check for instructions and notices since last shift and to brief your team on updates.

2.    Ensure that the daily routine of the Prison is adhered to, that the Prisoners are properly supervised and the Basic Grade Officers are deployed for assigned duties and carry out those duties.

3.    Report to the Deputy Superintendent any matters affecting the staff under his/her charge.

4.    Responsible for the operations of the prison in the absence of the superintendents.

5.    Report to the Assistant Superintendent, anything affecting the prisoner population.

6.    Report to the Maintenance Manager any maintenance issues.

7.    Ensure all inmates and staff under his/her charge maintains proper discipline.

8.    Support reception by checking Commitments and Warrants for all new receptions prior to admission.

9.    Ensure that the Prison Daily Orderly sheet is checked and completed; operational Diaries, Journal and other records are up to date.

10.  Ensure that all incident reports and charges as required are prepared and forwarded for action to the Assistant Superintendent.

11.  Ensure that Inmates are properly prepared for court and release.

12.  Ensure that Inmates are given medical treatment, fed and locked down at the prescribed time.

13.  Ensure that Inmates learn a skill where possible and given an opportunity to get basic education and counselling as per listings.

14.  Organize searches as required and to record correctly.

15.  Ensure that all security locks, bolts, bars and perimeter fence are checked daily and recorded in the required document.

16.  Responsible for the security of the institution, all security measures in place for prisoners and the institution are maintained and that any breaches be investigated and reported to the Superintendent / Deputy Superintendent.

17.  Ensure that all Inmates are treated humanely.

18.  Formally hand over the prison and operations to the next incoming shift.

19.  Ensure that no unauthorized persons or articles enter the institution.

20.  Ensure that no officer leave their post without being properly relieved and to be responsible for the direct supervision of all Officers and the management of Officer Breaks.

21.  Carry out orders and instructions handed down by the Superintendent Staff.

22.  Ensure that prisoner requests are recorded and forwarded to the Assistant Superintendent for processing.

23.  Ensure that when taking over duties the Prison Nominal Role and equipment is correct, and that Prison Roll checks are carried out at the prescribed times and recorded accordingly.

24.  Ensure that during Day and Night shifts regular Security Checks, wing Patrols, LBB’s are carried out and recorded correctly.

25.  Adhere to all Public Service codes, rules and regulations.

26.  Carry out other duties as may be directed from time to time by the Superintendent.

QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE:

Qualifications:                   

·       High School diploma or equivalent

·       Prison Officer 3-week basic training course.

·       Prison First Line Management course or equivalent.

·       demonstrated leadership skills/course

Experience:            

Prison Experience required, basic Officer training and three years’ experience in the custodial environment.

SALARY: Grade 6.1 - $45,992.00 per annum
